Camp FAQ

What if my child has dietary restrictions?

We are happy to accommodate most dietary needs, including food allergies, vegetarian, gluten-free, and other medically necessary restrictions. Please indicate any dietary requirements during registration. For specific concerns, contact us at info@camppuhtok.com before your session begins.

Do counselors stay in the cabins with campers?

Yes, counselors stay in the cabins with campers to ensure safety and support. We maintain a 1:6 counselor-to-camper ratio. Occasionally, additional staff members may also stay in the cabins as needed.

Can my camper request to bunk with a friend?

Yes! Each camper is allowed one guaranteed bunk/group request. To ensure the request is honored, both campers must request each other. Requests will be submitted through the health forms sent out in May. You’re welcome to list more than one request; while we can guarantee one, we will do our best to accommodate additional requests whenever possible based on group placement and availability. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at info@camppuhtok.com.

Can parents communicate with their children during camp?

We encourage limited direct communication so campers can stay fully engaged, but parents may request updates from the office during the week. Parents can send mail to campers throughout the week—distributed daily—and campers can send mail home as well (please pack stamps).

Is financial assistance available?

Yes, financial assistance can be obtained through the Y's Open Doors Savings program. More information, as well as the application can be found at: ymaryland.com/opendoors

Can my camper bring a cell phone to camp?

At Puh’tok, we have a No Cell Phone Policy for campers. Time at camp may be one of the few opportunities in your child’s life to truly disconnect from technology. Leaving phones at home allows campers to focus on what camp is all about—being a kid, building friendships, trying new things, and being fully present in the Puh’tok experience. If a camper brings a cell phone to camp, it will be confiscated and securely held in the office until the end of the day/week. Parents and campers may retrieve the phone at sign-out. Please remind your child that if they need to contact home for any reason, they can speak with their counselor, village director, or the camp office, and we will gladly assist them. If any concerns arise, or if your child is having difficulty adjusting, our team will contact parents right away. We maintain this policy not only to protect the camp experience, but also to help ensure a safe and respectful environment for all campers. Cell phones can introduce challenges that detract from the community we strive to build at Puh’tok, including: Social media bullying Access to inappropriate online materials Unauthorized photos or videos of other campers Increased homesickness due to lack of immersion in camp life By removing personal technology, campers are free to connect with nature, build real friendships, and fully engage in the joy and adventure of camp. If you have any questions or concerns about our Cell Phone Policy, please contact the Puh’tok office at 410-329-6590.
